At East Midlands Pipeline, we are spearheading an ambitious project to accelerate the hydrogen economy in the East & West Midlands by at least a decade.
It begins with repurposing a 63km decommissioned underground pipeline (originally constructed to transport oil products) into a hydrogen-ready asset for the storage and transport of green hydrogen.
This hydrogen pipeline will form the backbone of a regional hydrogen network across the East and West Midlands, increasing regional and national energy security, and creating a resilient low-carbon transport and industrial supply chain.
The project will be delivered in two stages:
Stage 1· Infrastructure Conversion – Transition the existing pipeline into a fully operational green hydrogen transport and storage asset in 1-2 years.
Stage 2· Hydrogen Generation Ecosystem Development – Fast track a distributed green hydrogen generation ecosystem along the pipeline, with generation, storage and offtake at strategic locations within 2-5 years.
This project represents a rare opportunity to unlock a hydrogen ecosystem at pace and scale. The resulting Pipeline Area Energy Plan (PAEP) will be the first operational hydrogen generation ecosystem capable of integrating with the wider energy infrastructure in the UK.
Repurposing an our existing pipeline is typically 20%-40% of the cost to construct a new pipeline across the East and West Midlands.
That’s up to a 10 x reduction in capital expenditure, freeing up funds for hydrogen production, storage, and offtake infrastructure across the East and West Midlands.
A new pipeline requires years of planning, environmental permitting, consultation, land negotiations and construction.
Our pipeline is already in the ground, legally permitted under the Pipelines Act 1962, and can begin phased conversion immediately, accelerating regional hydrogen deployment by a decade or more.
Building new causes substantial environmental disruption (habitat loss and fragmentation, CO₂ emissions from construction, negative biodiversity impact and potential pollution).
Our underground pipeline route is already established and maintained, minimising new disturbance and eliminating decades of ecological recovery typically required for new builds.
Our Pipeline is a rare, high-integrity asset with ideal geographic positioning, spanning Freeports, industrial users, and clean energy growth zones.
Its reuse aligns with circular economy principles and government policy promoting infrastructure optimisation and hydrogen repurposing.
Green hydrogen will be produced primarily using renewable electricity, with a focus on solar and curtailed wind to enable electrolysis. We are also looking at production via advanced gas conversion technologies to increase production.
To manage demand fluctuations and ensure supply flexibility, we are exploring a number of strategic hydrogen storage options beyond linepack capacity. This includes a variety of both proven and innovative solutions on a large scale.
By increasing hydrogen production we can drive down the cost, opening up hydrogen to the transport sector (road, rail and air) and also to industrial users. The ecosystem needs key strategic refuelling hubs to support regional demand.
Our pipeline can connect strategic freeport site of Ratcliffe on Soar, EMAGIC and East Midlands Airport, facilitating key offtakers.
